The Broadway
The Broadway
The story of The Broadway and the land it occupies is truly exciting. Its original buildings, The Historic Third Ward District, and the current structure have all played a vital role in Milwaukee’s History
One of the more significant events in the city’s past occurred in October of 1892. A great fire swept through 16 square blocks of the Third Ward District. A total of 81 brick buildings and 359 wood frame structures were destroyed. Reconstruction began immediately and within 36 years, the Third Ward District was once again the booming center of Milwaukee commerce. Wholesale trade thrived along Water, Broadway, and Milwaukee Streets and by 1919, had become Milwaukee’s single largest industry.
In the years following the great fire, four 5-story cream city brick buildings were constructed starting in 1893, which today comprise The Broadway (a 6th floor was not added until years later). Jacob Wellauer, a wholesale grocer, built the Wellauer Building on the corner of Broadway and Buffalo Streets. This structure was designed by H.C. Koch & Company -- one of Milwaukee’s most renowned turn-of-the-century architects. Alexander Breslauer, a distiller and importer of wines and liqueurs, constructed three buildings (known as the Breslauer Buildings) just to the south. These too, were designed by H.C. Koch & Company.
Over the years, the buildings have undergone many changes. But the distinctive architectural features remain, or have been complimented. These features include a recessed entry which is marked by large polished granite columns, the decorative pressed tin ceiling found in some areas of the first floor pilasters, arched hoods and round arches which act as attractive window treatments.
Each of these rare architectural details reflects the meticulous craftsmanship involved in creating this remarkable historic landmark...and the careful restoration in returning it to its former glory. The Broadway was converted to living quarters in the 1980’s.
